Fingersmiths

Nell's Notes

The last time we had a review was on my birthday, so it seems fitting that I have ago in the same month a year on!
We started with a rousing open session with Kathy on melodeon, Dave on bass, Den on guitar, me on melodeon, MacGuinness on guitar and mandola, Max on banjo and Sue Clark on a shaky-thingy supplied by Kathy. Tunes were Dancing Spider, Upton-upon-seven (a Morris tune), Dingle Regatta; MacGuinness gave us a couple of songs: Bad Moon Rising and Pretty Boy Floyd. Then there followed a Scottish session with Marie's Wedding and 100 Pipers, ending with Mason's Apron at full speed!

Fingersmiths are (l-r): Mike Trim and Jonathan Potts.

Following this we had a short break while Finger Smiths (Jonathan Potts and Mike Trim) set up. They played to a full house giving us a song from 'Show of Hands' arranged by Mike, who, and many of you may not know this, used to be their producer. The next set was dedicated to Jonathan's Dog Benson (will he be getting a cat called Hedges, I wonder?). Benson, by the way christened, Jon's new house by leaving a puddle on the floor, which Sandra assures us he doesn't usually do! Jon then led with a beautiful tune called 'The Grasshoppers Dance', followed by a song written by Jon called Lightening Sky and finished the first half with a tune called 'The Butterfly' ... and all this to the heckling by our dear Linda!

While the raffle was under way the second half started with Michelle on recorder and she played us two well-known tunes; Seasons in the Sun and I will Survive by Gloria Gaynor.

MacGuinness then took the stage with 'Come to the Hills' accompanied by John in the audience playing harmonica and then Donegal Lads when they ask Max, our local Vicar, to join them on Banjo. They've even got their own website: www.macguinness.bravehost.com

MacGuinness are (l-r): Paul and Gerry

Denis Ahern amused us with his self penned 'The Ring on the Finger' based on the saying 'A part of me is with you wherever you go'. This is one of my favourites, but Dennis I still love Canvey Island the best (x!). Dennis also sang another self penned song: General Custer's Second Last Stand.

things that make squeeky noises!

After this we had Den Edwards singing 'Curtains of Night' by Daryl Adams, accompanied by Dave O'Neill and Max Blake, then Kath and Nell joined them for 'May the Circle be Unbroken.' A big well-done goes to Kath who had never played it before… but the beer helped!

Les Potts showing how it should be done

Finally our penultimate act was by Les Potts singing Road to Hell and Romeo and Juliet. I guess Romeo and Juliet could be the road to hell! I thought Sandra may have a reply to the Road to Hell but she didn't take it up!

Fingersmiths started their second spot with 'I don't want to know about Evil,' is this the reply to his dad's song?
This was followed by a set of jigs they call 'The Leitrim Set', starting with The Leitrim Jig. During this Trish (one of our bar maids) ably cleared the tables assisted by her PA Nell passing the glasses.
Jon then went into his European set and Linda was back to her heckling, but it was no good - they kept their clothes on! They played Frilka and Cabaso, if you think I'm going to spell that right you must be off with the fairies. By this time Linda was rather over come and need some HRT patches. Next came the High Reel set and as Jon said they go very high. Fortunately for Carol and George there were not any broken glasses! Part way through the set Mike swiftly put on a capo and retuned. (Flash git!)
11.05 finished the set but the crowd was still up for more. Thanks again to George (our ever-obliging Landlord) who let us have another one.
Jon wrote the final tune to accompany their song, he took just 10 minutes. (Linda said she'd heard!) They played a song, which this co-written by Biddy Bliegh (spelling dubious) and Mike. Pat joined in with the shaking head; Linda on the red wine, Den and Bid on the leg slapping and a good time was had by all.
A big Thank You went to Den Edwards for painting the new Sail Loft banner and the club donated £60 to Den's favourite charity Gorkha Learning For Life. www.gorkhalearning.com
