2nd Open Session

Tumulty's Bar, USA

The 2nd Sail Loft Folk Session @ Tumulty's May 18th, 2006

Last night saw the second evening of the SailLoft @ Tumulty's Pub in New Brunswick, New Jersey. As you can see I got there early to set up the instruments and sound.

The twin neck was made for me by British luthier Rob Armstrong. The Gibson Mandolin was a bargain on e-bay. Just for you guitar geeks out there.

The crowd or lack of it was small, but intimate. The beer was on fine form, so was the musicians. Pete Graber returned with his harmonica, accompanied this time by his rhythm section, Jeff on nylon sting guitar. Pete's dulcet tones are liquid gold; add to that, Jeff's subtle almost Latin sounding jazz style and you can begin to imagine the flow of the music, very sensual in places!

Chris Wylde followed on the twin neck playing sections from his CD, Cask Conditioned.
A few tunes on the Mandolin gave him time to howl at the moon with a few songs, Wish you were here (we really do), Step it out Mary, Dirty ole Town and I'll tell me Ma (for Baz)

A surprise performer showed up. Matt DeBlass (isn't he the guy from Friends?). His business card reads, 'Have harp will travel'. Sadly the harp objected to travel last night and sat in the corner sulking with broken strings. Undaunted, Matt took to the stage, and took the crowd (I will use that word) by storm! He is a hearty Irishman with a hundred songs in his head.

With his guitar he proceeded to sing some old favorites, I'll tell me Ma, reprise! And few others. Chris joined him for a fast paced and thumping version of The Star of the County Down, Chris on Bohran (never ever knew how to spell it, let alone play it)

Pete & Jeff returned to close out the evening with a couple more of their arrangements.

All in all a good night and thanks to those of you who mustered the strength to pull yourself out off the couch and into Tumulty's for good food, great beer, good company and sound music. Till next time.

Chris:

PS: Michelle, hope it was a nice distraction for you!

Open Session

Tumulty's Bar, USA

The first Sail Loft Folk Club at Tumulty's pub, New Brunswick, USA.

Review by Chris Wylde.

Last night I finally came good on a promise I made at the Sail Loft's 25th Anniversary to bring the Sail Loft to the people of New Jersey. Tumulty's Pub in New Brunswick was the chosen venue for our first evening of music and song. Though we had only 34 people the quality of the musicians was top drawer. Chris Wylde made a small introduction about how the Sail Loft began and how it has grown over the last 25 years. Then it was time for the music, and what a treat we had for our first night.

Chris opened up with a few guitar pieces of his own, familiar to the regulars at The Swan. He sang a couple of Songs by America, very apt. Cat then took the opportunity to sing some of her original songs. She has a very balanced sweet voice and her songs are strong too, look out Sheryl Crow. Next up was Pete Graber, whose opening notes killed off every side conversation in the house. His harmonica playing is world class. A real treat for any Larry Adler fan. Pete has played the National Anthem at Baseball Games.

Chris played a few tunes on his new/vintage mandolin before John Robson took the mic. He played a couple of songs and his voice and style was as good as it gets from a singer/songwriter who takes his music seriously.

Cat's guitar building husband Mark performed songs on his self-built guitar. Now that's talent. Not just bringing your guitar but building it first! It's as good if not better than any Martin or Taylor. Pete returned by public demand and joined Mark on a nice bluesy number. Kevin and Tommy from Firedog Studios were the final performers to play. Nice to see them there with their good harmonies, slide guitar and songs. Chris wrapped up the evening with a piece written for classical guitar and one last duet with Pete, before he left for the hour-long drive back into Pennsylvania.

All in all, not a bad start. Low in attendance but very high in energy and talent. Thanks to everyone for playing. See you at the next SailLoftUSA.

Chris

[Nice one Chris. It sounds like it was a great night over there in the US of A. We're all proud of you over here and wish you all the best for your next one. A huge thanks to all the musicians who turned up and played, and to the people who turned up to listen. Now, that's what folk is all about !! Dave]

Open Session

Swan Pub, UK

Nell's Notes:

A great opening jam with Kathy on melodeon, Dave on bass, Den on guitar, Nell on melodeon, Paul and Jerry (MacGuinness) on guitar, mandola and bongos, Max on banjo, Steve Stott joined us on mandolin (welcome back to the Sail Loft Steve!), Dennis Aherne on Banjo and the Norwegian contingent on percussion [Phew! Mind you, it was a great tune-a-round! Ed]. Tunes this week: We started off with Nell leading Jump to the Sun, written by John Kirkpatrick when he was about 18, next was our old favourite Dancing Spider, then a new one for us: French Mans Mazurka, we followed this with a set of Irish tunes led by Dennis Aherne, Harvest home and boys of Blue hill, next came Cock of the North and Dingle Regatta chosen by Max, Dennis followed this with Sacowes (spelling dubious) possibly Irish, Marie's Wedding for Paul who loves it, Jerry requested Mason's Apron which started at full speed and then went crazy.

Following our short break Dave started us off with a Bob Dylan song called The Days that used to be and then The Damage is Done by Neil Young.

Diane was up next and sang 'You do something to me' and then Weary Blues, using the tuning that Den showed her.

Pete Bailey brought along his twelve string and sang Sugar, during which he broke a string (lucky he had twelve of them!) then he sang 'What's Going Down? By Steven Steals.

Next was Ann who has not sung to an audience for 30 years. She sang two beautiful unaccompanied Irish songs: 'Though I Live Not Where I Love' and 'My True Love. [Ann was over from Norway for a couple of days and we're proud that she came to us and sang! Ed]

Dennis Aherne gave as two tunes, accompanied by Jerry Glynn on bongos, Dave on bodhran and Paul in the audience on mouth organ. Dennis thanked them for covering up his c..k ups! Dennis then gave us a song called 'Everybody's Making it But Me' and we all joined in with the chorus.Sandra and Les giving a bit of backing singing from the bar.Whilst the raffle went round and we waited for Deja Blue toset up. Tonight there was John on rhythm guitar, Tomon harmonica and John Jnr lead guitar. If you want to see them again they will be performing at the village hall on December 10th. For more info you can visit www.gorkhalearning.com and check out the events page.

The Deja Blue Trio gave us a great little set.

Max, Steve Stott and Dave O'Neill played us a few rousing tunes. Den Edwards then joined them and sang his latest song 'The Old Dirt Road' inspired by Four strong Winds and then he was joined on stage for 'Will the Circle be Unbroken' by Nell, Kathy, and Pete Bailey, Paul played from the floor, Dave joined in part way through and we were all accompanied by the Norwegian contingent on percussion. Well done Den another blinder!

The raffle was then called whist Holly Atterton and her fiancé Damon set themselves up. Congratulations to them both on their engagement. (I hope you'll be as happy as Den and I are.) They sang 'Change of Heart' whilst Dave and Kathy had a cuddle. (Dave sat on Kathy's lap; I hope she'll still be able to Morris dance!) Next they sang 'Anyone who needs a Friend', recently written by Damon.

Ann gave us another quick Norwegian song and this was swiftly followed by Legacy who first sang a song Sandra had heard by Emmylou Harris then they sang a Sail Loft favourite 'I'll be your Baby Tonight' lovingly known to us as 'Kick your shoes off' and of course we did. Sorry Steve did I get you? Apologise go to our Trish, one of our barmaids, who got hit by a flying shoe

Our last act was at 11.15 was MacGuinness (Paul and Jerry) Paul played Guitar and mandola and Jerry played bongos and guitar.

11 great acts don't miss next week, come early and get your name down for a spot! Thanks go to tonight MC Dave O'Neill; and our soundman Dave .We were all very disappointed that Linda was slack on the heckling tonight! Hopefully this will improve next week when our guest, so she tells us has a great 6 pack! (I think she may be in love) Photographs by Paul from MacGuinness
